Driving Licence Check Medical Check Blunder
It has been reported by the Press Assocation on 8th November 2011 that two people have been killed by drink-drivers who were over two-and-a-half times over the drink drive limit. This has occurred because the offending drink-drivers was given back their driving licence without the correct medical assessement taking place.
The Road Minister Mike Penning expressed "great regret" over the two killed, which happened in 1996 and again in 2006. Mike Penning also states this was discovered by Department for Transport and Ministry of Juctice in August.
A review of communication between the courts and the DVLA showed 265,225 cases from the past 20 years where alcohol readings were not passed to the DVLA meaning medical assessments were not triggered.
Of, these, so far 3,895 of the convicted drivers fall in to the HRO category, further 28,830 records are being checked which may take serveral months.
